WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The 'Color Me Rad' trend is sweeping the nation. Organizations across the country are hosting the colorful 5K runs/walks in cities from California to North Carolina.

University of North Carolina Wilmington is hosting one October 20, 2013.

There are more than 6,000 participants signed up and the Seahawk Club hopes to meet its goal of signing up 10,000 people. Runners and walkers will take off in waves throughout the morning October 20, 2013.

Bethany Thurston joined GMC anchor Ashley Jacobs in studio to talk about why they're raising money for the Seahawk Club; a portion of proceeds will go to them when participants type 'UNCW' in the promo code line during registration.

The mission of the Seahawk Club is to strengthen and develop the athletic programs at UNCW by raising funds to support athletic scholarships and the improvement of facilities. The Seahawk Club strives to provide scholarships for approximately 360 student-athletes each year. In the past year, UNCW athletic teams have averaged a 3.12 GPA, have contributed 2,045 hours of community service and have achieved much athletic success.

Several members of the WWAY news team plan to run in the 5K; you can register too by clicking here.
