Carolina Beach, NC (WWAY) — It seems like some just can’t get enough of the cold.

Hundreds of folks took a polar plunge this weekend.

The chilly challenge raises money for the New Hanover county Special Olympics.

Funds from the tenth annual event will help support more than 500 athletes throughout the year.

Participants came out to Carolina beach in t-shirts, bathing suits and of course, costumes.

Some joined in the fun as a team. The owner of a Lindley Habilitation Services, Neal Lindley has organized a team from all over the state for the past eight years.

“Oh, it feels great. We always do a bunch of fun activities with people we care for. We love them so much.” Lindley said. “I mean, this is the highlight of our year. It’s a big thing we talk about at all our agency functions. It’s really become a competition between all our staff to see who can have the best homemade costume.

Lindley was literally head and shoulders above everyone when he plunged in the ocean as Big Bird. He said he had his fair share of hot glue and yellow feather boas as he spent months working on his costume.

This year, his agency alone raised over $8,000 for the Special Olympics.
